A brownstone after construction has fine dust in every profile of its moldings, on every tread of an original staircase, on the mantels and in the leading of stained glass — and those surfaces can't be replaced. We remove it in passes — bulk first, a second after resettling, then detail — using soft brushes and a vacuum with a brush head on woodwork and plaster, a barely damp cloth on painted surfaces only, a gentle wipe and dry buff on old glass, and never a wet cloth on plaster. Parquet is vacuumed with a soft head and damp-mopped last each pass. A frame-house renovation is more conventional and quicker, with the shared hallway included if one floor was done.

Residue is treated surface by surface: protective-film adhesive lifted from new counters with a product suited to the material, paint splatter removed from old floors and hardware without scratching, caulk smears and grout haze cleared from new tile with non-abrasives. New cabinetry is cleaned inside; vents, fixtures and light fittings cleared; sills and tracks detailed; walls and baseboards wiped. The kitchen and bathrooms are sanitized to finish.
